What is the SEN (Romania's National Power System)?

The SEN is the national grid that carries electricity from power plants to consumers. Transelectrica is the operator that runs it and publishes, in real time, how much Romania consumes and how much it generates.

What does the cross-border balance mean?

It is the difference between the electricity flowing into the country and the electricity flowing out. A positive value means Romania is importing, a negative value means it is exporting. We always spell the direction out in words here, so it cannot be misread.

Why does consumption always equal generation plus the balance?

Because a grid cannot store energy inside itself: whatever is drawn in an instant has to be generated or imported in that same instant. That is not an accounting convention, it is a law of physics. When the figures fail to close, it means a measurement error, not a shortfall.

What happens if generation does not cover consumption?

The difference is made up automatically by imports. Were imports not enough either, grid frequency would drop, reserves would be called up, and as a last resort consumers would be disconnected. That is why a shortfall never appears as a missing number, only as lower consumption.

What counts as renewable energy here?

We add up hydro, wind, solar and biomass, measured against total generation. It excludes nuclear, which is emission-free but not renewable.

Why does solar sometimes show a negative value?

At night the panels generate nothing, but the installations still draw a little power to run themselves. That is why the value can fall below zero, while the percentages are clamped at zero.

How often is the data updated?

Transelectrica publishes values roughly once a minute. The site reads the source every minute and the page refreshes every 30 seconds. The time of the measurement is shown at the top.

Which countries is Romania interconnected with?

Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The Cross-border exchanges section shows the flow on every individual line.

Is the data official?

The data comes from Transelectrica and consists of operational values that are not statistically validated. This site is independent and unofficial, published for information only.

Can I use the data in my own project?

Yes. There are two open JSON endpoints: /api/sen for the current state and /api/sen/history for history. Please do not poll more often than once a minute, and cite Transelectrica as the source.
